But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12

Have you ever awoken from a deep sleep and not remembered where you were or who you were? You attempt to transition from your dream state to the reality of who you are and why you need to get up at this moment. For many Christians, this is what life can feel like all the time. We do not know who we are and why we are here. We catch glimpses of purpose and identity but fail to fully realize them. We sense a greater calling but are told by society that we are less than what we are.

In Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers also has an identity crisis. She cannot remember her life before six years ago. She has flashes of memories, but it does not seem to line up with what she has been told by her Kree mentor Yon-Rogg. She feels her power beneath the surface, but is constantly held back from utilizing her strength.

captainmarvelthumb-1551227863653Satan, like Yon-Rogg, will use anything and anyone to hold back the power of The Holy Spirit inside of us. He will use your past, your insecurities, and your circumstances to limit what you believe you are capable of. Satan manages to infiltrate our thoughts and convince us to question ourselves in everything we do. Satan even tried this approach on Jesus in the wilderness.

And the tempter came and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But He answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 4:3-4

Satan knew who Jesus was, Jesus knew who He was; but Satan still started the conversation with “if you are”. Jesus was having none of Satan’s “if” statements. Jesus knew exactly who He was. In John 10:30 Jesus says “I and the Father are one.”  This claim, coupled with the Word of God, in essence was Jesus saying “I AM who I AM.” Jesus did not need to preform a miracle to convince Satan of His equality to God. Had Jesus done this, it would have been because of the sin of pride. That pride would have rendered Jesus’ ability to atone for our sins powerless. But Jesus resisted Satan.

In Captain Marvel, Carol was challenged to fight Yon-Rogg without using her powers. To prove her worth in hand to hand combat. Yon-Rogg attempted to goad her into allowing her insecurities fight her battles, rather than relying on the power within her. Carol, like Jesus, would not allow the enemy to manipulate her. When we allow the Holy Spirit to fight on our behalf, we unleash a power the enemy cannot withstand.

When we accept salvation through Jesus Christ we are adopted into God’s family. Just as children take on the name of their adopted parents, so we take on the name of our Heavenly Father. We are children of the Great I AM. So when Satan brings the fight to you, remember where your power comes from and don’t hold back!

From where does my help come?

My help comes from the LORDwho made heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:1-2

When Satan reminds you of your past, remind him I AM forgiven. When he brings up your insecurities, remind him I AM loved. When he brings up your circumstances, remind him I AM a child of the ONE TRUE KING.
